Packham. This Australian-bred pear was originally grown in 1896 by Charles Packham, and became so popular that it's also known as Packham's Triumph. These bulbous, wide-bottomed pears learn slightly to one side. Their green skin is covered in tiny russet speckles and ripens to a light yellow. South Africa's main pear producing areas are Ceres, Groenland, Wolseley/Tulbagh (all in the Western Cape) and Langkloof East in the Eastern Cape. Packham pears are an excellent source of vitamin C and dietary fiber.
