Egypt opens new export season of Valencia oranges

Updated: Jan 19, 2022

"Some growers began packing their first oranges of the season last week. However, the oranges still look somewhat yellow. And the BRIX value is below 10%. These oranges are not suitable for the Chinese market. That is why we waited another week before harvesting. That allows the color of the oranges to deepen and for the fruit to accumulate more sugar," growers network said.

"Some suppliers export the early-season Valencia oranges to nearby destinations such as Europe and Russia. Others export directly to China. They all compete to be the first on the market there. Our company will begin harvesting on the 20th of January. We supply Hong Kong, Guangzhou, and Shanghai. And we only supply A-grade oranges. That is why we can not rush the harvest." said Amr of Kingo Egypt.

"The Egyptian government witnessed these developments and called a meeting with several exporters. They announced support for the industry during the export season of Valencia oranges. We hope this support will arrive in the next few weeks. At the same time we look forward to the smooth start of another Valencia orange export season."

"The Egyptian production season of Navel oranges begins in late November and continues until the middle of January. The current export volume is much smaller than last year. Egypt exported 158,736 tons of Navel oranges in November and December of 2020, but in the same period in 2021, Egypt only exported 57,508 tons or oranges. That is a decline of more than 52%. There are many reasons for this decline. The cost price, for example, suddenly increased. Paper boxes became more expensive, and so did the cost of packing, transport, and raw materials. The export volume declined because increased costs pushed the price up." an industry source.

"We will start packing Valencia oranges next week. We have set our eyes on the India, HK, SEA & Chinese market. We hope to help the importers we cooperate with to earn money, because that is how we will all grow our business."
